Eating well and fighting global warming are two goals that can be achieved simultaneously by preparing delicious nutritious meals from local produce. A great deal of the stocked items in local supermarkets has actually travelled many hundreds or thousands of miles, most of which could be bought locally, if only consumers were aware of this.
Economies of scale and central buying policies mean that in most cases local produce is shipped to a central warehouse and then redistributed back to local grocery stores. This could mean the fresh vegetables grown by the farmer in town A are sent to consumers in town B, whilst produce grown in town B a few days later are sent to town A.
Benefits of Local Produce
Locally sourced produce is generally considered to be fresher, more delicious, and nutritious than produce transported in from foreign places. This belief is supported by none other than Jamie Oliver whose campaign to introduce good quality, locally sourced food into Britain's schools is attracting the attention of environmentalists and school administrators worldwide.
Adding to the call for more emphasis on local produce are the 100 Mile Diet founders, who successfully shopped locally in farmers markets for a year to prove that a healthy nutritious diet without the environmental cost of transport is possible.
When consumers shop locally for produce, family owned farms benefit, encouraging investment in organic farming practices and innovative methods such as glass house farming to grow out of season fruits and vegetables.
In the age of convenience such as we have today, the quality of meals is often overlooked, consequently many developed nations are now grappling with the increased burden of funding health care services. A return to eating delicious nutritious meals from local produce seems to be one solution that shows signs of working, and is calculated to reduce carbon emissions, and so directly benefits the environment.
